Today we did some Think Outside The Box inspired writing inspired by this picture:
Some students made it into a cat, timer, underground world, and even a villain! What would you make it into??

We enjoyed the movie version of The City of Ember, and noticed many differences between the book and the movie including the age of Poppy, they didn't have candles until climbing the big hill, things happened faster in the movie, order of events was changed (Granny searching the couch), some things never happened in the book, note falls to a different person, and the creatures were gigantic. One wonder we have was, Why do they never give the people of Ember movable light (flashlights, etc)?

For our final STEAM challenge we worked in groups to build the tallest tower possible using only paper. Our tallest tower was over 120cm tall and it supported the weight of a plant pot holding 150 plastic bingo chips. Great team work Grade 4 :)

We had a great time today in our last Music and PE classes at New Brighton. Thank you Ms.Lysak and  Ms.Nanavaty for an awesome year!!

Reminders:
- Tomorrow is the last day of school. Early dismissal at 11:45
- Report Cards home tomorrow

Today we explored Impressionism and learned a bit about artist, Claude Monet. Did you know that that focus of the artist was to lend a perspective to what they saw. Not to merely recreate an object or landscape but to give it a very human touch and a distinct dimension to make it relatable to every day life?

In Math we continued working with Area and Perimeter and reviewed how these could be used in real life.

We read more of our novel, The City of Ember, and learned that some of the guards are in on the hoarding of supplies with the Mayor.

Please remember that:
- Friday is our Celebration of Learning/Garden Party - 10:00 start
- Fun lunch is on Thursday
- Next Monday is Sport's Day
- If you will not be here on the last day of school, please let Mrs. Cose know and send in a stamped envelope the Report Card can be mailed to you.

What a Whirlwind of a Wednesday!

We started the day with a performance from the kindergarten students who will soon be moving into grade one next year. It is hard to believe our Grade 4's were so little a short time ago!

We worked on researching a famous Albertan and began organizing our information using a new computer program. The students were able to suggest many famous Albertans for the project. Which famous Albertan would you want to learn more about?

During our reading of The City of Ember today, we learned that some of the citizens are stealing food!

In Science we have been learning about Light & Shadow and spent some time representing  things that emit and things that reflect light using modeling clay.

Rehearsals are well underway for our Grade 4 celebration next Friday. See information below about snacks!

Reminder:
The Grade 2’s will be hosting a Water Walk on Friday, June 14th to educate others about various water topics and how the way we live impacts our natural environment.  This event will begin in the gymnasium and then proceed outdoors for a walk around the pond with a Grade 2 Environmental Activist. Two Grade 2 classes at a time are responsible to host, educate, share and guide everyone.

Please note: Students will be walking around New Brighton Pond as a part of this activity.

Happy Monday!

During literacy today we read some more of the novel The City of Ember. In the chapter we learned that Lina has discovered some instructions that may save the city!

In math we reviewed clocks and did some work with elapsed time.

This afternoon we had our first dress rehearsal for out Year end celebration. It is going to be amazing!

Reminder: tomorrow there is an information meeting at DMCS about Band for next year.

Friday, June 7, 2019

We didn't have very much time in our classroom today because there were so many things going on in our school!

Our Grade 3 friends were hosting an AnimalPalooza. We visited their exhibits and learned so much about animals from around the world. We also had a chance to see their butterflies before they are released - amazing!

The Calgary Public Library was here today also. They shared about their Summer Reading Challenge. It is free to sign up and there are prizes too! This is a great way to incentivize your kids to read and explore literacy. One thing my family loves to do is borrow audio books for our long summer drives.

Finally, we had a visit from Ms. Manning the band teacher at DMCS. She brought some instruments in for us to explore. If your child was interested in these instruments there is an evening, June 11, for you to learn more.

Have a great weekend!

Today we began our investigation into Light and Shadow. We looked at some photos and talked about the different ways we could sort them. Students were very creative! For our final sort we grouped them into Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque categories and worked in groups to define these terms. As a class we combined these definitions to come up with a shared understanding of what these words mean.

To solidify our understandings we did an exploration around the school to find examples of each and created PicCollages with a partner.

Have fun at the Family dance tonight!

What does the clock say?

Today we made some clock models to use when learning about time. We discussed the parts of a clock and difference between the hour and minute hands. Then we practiced setting our clocks to a specific time and telling time on other clocks.

We read more of the novel City of Ember, in the chapter we read Lina visited a green house. There was a problem with the potatoes. How could this impact the people living underground? Can they live if the vegetables they are growing are no longer edible?brain

At recess some of our Grade One friends found this caterpillar. What kind of butterfly do you think it will change in to?

FYI:
- Tomorrow we will be walking to DMCS for a performance in the afternoon. We will be away from the school from 1-3pm. If you will need to pick your child up during that time please contact the school office.

- June book orders are due Thursday. This is your last chance to order books this year.

We had a busy Monday!

This morning we did a word scramble. The secret word was CELEBRATION. NH got 67 words using the letters!

We read some more of our City of Ember novel. Today we wrote some Pros and Cons about the new jobs and wrote about which person had the best first day.

We did a math test on decimals and started talking about time. Do you have any clocks in your house? How many? Where?

Tomorrow is BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY. Ms.Nanavaty is asking you to please mark your bike so that it won't get mixed up with another one. There may be several bikes that look the same. We will be parking the bikes in the gym.

We did some research about plants and their importance to people, animals, water and the land.

We did our June calendar today. It is going to be a busy month!

Happy Wednesday!

Another busy day in Grade 4 we were working on:

- Plant projects
- adding and subtracting decimals
- finishing up novels with our guided reading groups
- starting a new novel, The City of Ember
- frisbee skills
- boom whackers in music

*** We are still seeking donations of large cardboard pieces for our year end celebrations

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

What a gorgeous day for out door PE! Today we started working with frisbees, ask us how to use the "check" to help us hold it properly.

Today we worked with adding and subtracting decimals. Most of us were able to do this with ease, and a few needed reminders about borrowing and lining up decimal numbers (i.e.. 12.06 + 342.9).

We are well into creating our Plant Research projects. Thank you to families who have sent in materials! These will be on display during our Celebration of Learning on June 21st.

Reminders:
- We will be outside for PE everyday if the weather permits. Please send appropriate footwear, a hat and water bottle.

Thursday, May 23, 2019

We have been reading Little House on the Prairie and today we wrote about some similarities and differences between their lives and our own. Which life do you think would be more fulfilling??

In math we are working with money. Today some of us practiced adding up restaurant orders. This is a great thing to practice when you are out with your family :)

The sun was shining so it was a great day for outdoor PE! Please remember that we do take every opportunity to enjoy nice weather so send appropriate outdoor shoes and clothing for PE activities.

Welcome back!

It sounded like everyone had a great long weekend and there was lots of energy in the air to start off our week!

Today we started talking about money as a part of our focus on decimals. Taking time at home to count their piggy banks, make change at a store or maybe do some "dream" shopping, are all ways you could support this learning at home. We will be working on adding and subtracting money/decimals this week so extra time reinforcing the values of tenths and hundredths would be beneficial.

We are continuing our investigations into Plant Growth and Changes. Today we started some Art of the plats we are growing and a "zoomed-in" focus on one part. Looking good!

Reminders:
- Grade 4 year end celebration is on June 21
- Grade 4 intramural tomorrow
- Outstanding fees must be paid ASAP
- Library books will need to be returned in early June

Thursday, May 16, 2019

Happy Thursday!

FYI - Parents we talked about doing some "shopping" to be prepared for the changes that happen to girls during puberty. Our girls were interested in planning ahead for what might happen when at school so please support them with this through conversations and tucking a little something in their backpacks, if not this year then for Grade 5.

No school tomorrow or Monday - Have a fabulous weekend.

Budding Artists!

Today we began work on a watercolor representation of the lifecycle of the plants we have been researching. Students have gotten off to a great start! Parents if you are curious about what your child has found so far ask them to show you their work in google docs.

Reminders:
- No school Friday or Monday
- Fun Lunch next week
- large plastic containers (yogurt, sour cream, etc) are needed for transplanting our plants
